About Major League Baseball
History, rules, format, and why 70 million fans watch MLB every season
What Is MLB?
Major League Baseball (MLB) is the world’s premier professional baseball organisation, comprising 30 teams across the United States and Canada. Teams are split between the American League (AL) and National League (NL), each with East, Central, and West divisions.
The regular season runs from late March through late September, with each team playing 162 games. The top teams then compete in the October postseason, culminating in the World Series — the most prestigious title in baseball.
History of MLB
Baseball’s professional roots stretch back to 1871, but the modern MLB structure — American League joining the existing National League — was established in 1903. The first World Series was played that same year between Boston and Pittsburgh.
Iconic eras include the Dead Ball Era (1900–1919), the Live Ball Era sparked by Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson breaking the colour barrier in 1947, the expansion era, and today’s analytics-driven game where launch angle and spin rate define talent evaluation.
How Baseball Scoring Works
MLB Postseason Format
The MLB postseason features 12 teams — three division winners plus three wild card teams per league. The format:
Wild Card Series (Best of 3) → Division Series ALDS/NLDS (Best of 5) → Championship Series ALCS/NLCS (Best of 7) → World Series (Best of 7). TotalSportek covers every round live.
Greatest MLB Players Ever
Baseball’s GOAT debate spans generations. Babe Ruth (714 HRs, .342 AVG) remains the benchmark. Willie Mays, Hank Aaron (755 HRs), and Ted Williams are universally regarded as legends. Among modern greats, Barry Bonds holds the all-time HR record (762), while Shohei Ohtani — a dominant pitcher and elite hitter simultaneously — may be the greatest two-way player ever.
Iconic MLB Rivalries
No rivalry matches the Yankees vs Red Sox — over a century of AL East warfare, World Series heartbreak, and the famous Curse of the Bambino. The Subway Series (Yankees vs Mets) electrifies New York. On the West Coast, the Dodgers vs Giants rivalry stretches from New York to San Francisco to Los Angeles.
The Cubs vs Cardinals NL Central battle has defined Midwest baseball for over 100 years, while the Astros vs Rangers adds modern Texas heat to the rivalry landscape.
