About Rugby
History, formats, rules, and why millions love the game
What Is Rugby?
Rugby is a full-contact team sport played between two teams of 13 or 15 players. The objective is to carry, pass, or kick the ball into the opponent’s in-goal area to score a try (worth 5 points), followed by a conversion kick (2 points). Teams can also score via penalty kicks (3 points) or drop goals (3 points).
A standard rugby match lasts 80 minutes, split into two 40-minute halves. The game is known for its combination of raw physicality — tackles, scrums, and lineouts — with strategic kicking and creative attacking play.
History of Rugby
Rugby was born in 1823 in Rugby, England, when schoolboy William Webb Ellis famously picked up a football and ran with it. The sport formalised its rules by 1871 with the founding of the Rugby Football Union (RFU).
In 1895, the sport split into Rugby Union (amateur, 15-a-side) and Rugby League (professional, 13-a-side), a divide that still exists today. Rugby Union turned professional in 1995, opening the door to the modern global game with multimillion-pound players and worldwide broadcasting deals.
Rugby Union vs Rugby League
While both share the same oval ball and grass pitch, the two codes are distinct. Rugby Union (15 players) allows rucks, mauls, lineouts, and scrums with unlimited possession until a mistake. Rugby League (13 players) uses a faster 6-tackle rule, no rucks or lineouts, making it more open and end-to-end.
Rugby Union dominates internationally with the Six Nations and World Cup, while Rugby League’s heartlands are Australia (NRL), Northern England (Super League), and Papua New Guinea. Both are streamed live on TotalSportek.
Scoring in Rugby
Women’s Rugby
Women’s rugby is one of the fastest-growing sports globally. The Women’s Rugby World Cup and Women’s Six Nations are now major events with significant TV audiences. New Zealand’s Black Ferns, England’s Red Roses, and France are consistently the strongest sides.
Players like Portia Woodman, Emily Scarratt, and Gaëlle Hermet are household names. TotalSportek covers women’s rugby alongside the men’s game, ensuring you never miss a try from either competition.
The Spirit of Rugby
Rugby is globally admired for its spirit of sportsmanship. Players respect referees, opponents shake hands after the most brutal encounters, and the post-match “third half” — teams socialising together — is a cherished tradition at all levels.
World Rugby’s core values — Integrity, Passion, Solidarity, Discipline, and Respect — guide the game from grassroots to professional level. This unique culture, more than any individual match, is what makes rugby special and keeps fans coming back season after season.
