About the National Hockey League
History, rules, format, and why millions of fans watch NHL every season
What Is the NHL?
The National Hockey League (NHL) is the premier professional ice hockey league in North America, comprising 32 teams from the United States and Canada. Teams are split between the Eastern Conference and Western Conference, each with two divisions of eight teams.
The regular season runs from October through April, with each team playing 82 games. The top 16 teams then compete in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the most prestigious championship in professional hockey.
History of the NHL
The NHL was founded on November 26, 1917 in Montreal, Canada, initially with just four teams. The first Stanley Cup under NHL governance was awarded in 1918. The Original Six era (1942–1967) — Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Montreal, New York, and Toronto — defined the early identity of the league.
Expansion through the 1970s–90s brought the league to sunbelt US markets. The Great One, Wayne Gretzky, rewrote the record books, while Mario Lemieux and the Penguins dynasty defined the early 1990s. Today, players like Connor McDavid carry hockey into a new era.
How Ice Hockey Scoring Works
Stanley Cup Playoffs Format
The Stanley Cup Playoffs feature 16 teams — the top three division winners plus five wild card teams per conference. The format:
First Round (Best of 7) → Second Round / Conference Semis (Best of 7) → Conference Finals (Best of 7) → Stanley Cup Finals (Best of 7). TotalSportek covers every round live.
Greatest NHL Players Ever
Wayne Gretzky — “The Great One” — holds 61 NHL records and is universally considered the greatest hockey player of all time. Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, Mario Lemieux, and Maurice Richard are legends of their eras.
Modern greats include Sidney Crosby (three Stanley Cups), Alexander Ovechkin (all-time goals leader), and Connor McDavid — the fastest skater in the game today and widely regarded as the best active player in the world.
Iconic NHL Rivalries
The Battle of Alberta (Edmonton Oilers vs Calgary Flames) is one of the most intense provincial rivalries in sport. The Original Six derbies — especially Toronto vs Montreal and Boston vs Montreal — stretch back over a century.
The Metro rivalry between the New York Rangers, Islanders, Devils, and Penguins keeps the Northeast boiling every winter. On the West Coast, the Pacific rivalry between Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver creates must-watch hockey every time they meet.
