About the National Football League
History, rules, format, and why 100 million fans watch NFL every season
What Is the NFL?
The National Football League (NFL) is the world’s premier American football organisation, comprising 32 teams across the United States. Teams are split between the American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC), each with North, South, East, and West divisions.
The regular season runs September through January, with each team playing 17 games. The top 14 teams then compete in the January postseason, culminating in the Super Bowl — the most-watched sporting event in America.
History of the NFL
The NFL was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association, rebranded in 1922. The AFL-NFL merger in 1970 created the modern conference structure. Super Bowl I was played in 1967 between the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs.
Iconic eras include the Dynasty of the 49ers (1980s), the Dallas Cowboys’ dominance (1990s), the Patriots’ era under Belichick and Brady (2001–2019), and today’s Kansas City Chiefs dynasty under Patrick Mahomes.
How NFL Scoring Works
NFL Playoff Format
The NFL postseason features 14 teams — 4 division winners plus 3 wild card teams per conference. The top seed in each conference receives a first-round bye.
Wild Card (6 games) → Divisional Round (4 games) → Conference Championships (AFC/NFC) → Super Bowl. TotalSportek covers every round live.
Greatest NFL Players Ever
The NFL GOAT debate is fierce. Tom Brady (7 Super Bowl titles) is widely regarded as the greatest quarterback. Jerry Rice holds virtually every receiving record. Lawrence Taylor revolutionised the linebacker position.
Modern greats include Patrick Mahomes, already a multi-Super Bowl champion, Aaron Donald (the greatest defensive player of his era), and Lamar Jackson — a two-time NFL MVP redefining the quarterback position.
Iconic NFL Rivalries
The Cowboys vs Eagles NFC East rivalry defines American football on the East Coast. The Chiefs vs Raiders AFC West clash carries decades of history. The Patriots vs Colts — Manning vs Brady — produced some of the greatest games ever played.
The Packers vs Bears is the oldest rivalry in the NFL, dating back to 1921. The 49ers vs Cowboys NFC Championship clashes of the 1990s remain among the most memorable in playoff history.
